Neighborhood & History
909 Walnut is situated in one of the most walkable downtown neighborhoods in Kansas City, between River Market and the Power and Light District. Theater, arts and entertainment venues, fine dining and exceptional retail storefronts are only steps away from the historic high-rise.
The free-to-ride KC Street Car provides even greater access to Downtown Kansas City, which bustles with exciting, ever-changing events, including a seasonal farmers market at the River Market, events at the Sprint Center and shows at Kaufmann Center for the Performing Arts. Other streetcar stops include the vibrant Crossroads Arts District and rotating exhibits at historic union station.
A short drive leads to the entertainment district of Westport and the shopping destination of Country Club Plaza. For outdoor recreation, nearby greenspaces of Ilus W. Davis Park, Margaret Kamp Park and the 15-mile bicycle and pedestrian pathway of the Riverfront Heritage Trail connect our urban residents with numerous nature outlets.
Boasting the highest occupied residential unit in the central midwest with a height reaching 471 feet in the air, 909 Walnut holds a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1930-31 as the Fidelity National Bank & Trust Building (referred to locally as the Fidelity Building), the tower was liquidated in 1933 during the Great Depression. In 1946, it was acquired by the United States federal government and renamed the Federal Office Building. In 2000, 909 Walnut was obtained by Dallas-based Glenn Solomon of Simbol Commercial Inc., and Housing Horizons, LLC (a subsidiary of Kimberly Clark Corporation), to restore the high-rise to its original splendor. Featuring 161 residences, 90,000 square-feet of commercial office space, an attached eight-story gated garage, and a 16,000-square-foot, award-winning rooftop garden, 909 Walnut is entering its next phase of grandeur with a staff dedicated to preserving this piece of Kansas City history.
